Henry,
Not sure about covering the speakers with cloth or wood. Too much toe in, you will get a "V" soundstage and a sharper imaging. Isolation is critical. If you spike up the speakers, gone is the fatness which often mistaken for warmth. Gain is transparency.
A guru once told me that there is no bad speaker in high end, it will come down to mix and match like a chef mixing with his spices to create the taste he like. That is why sharing is important as we tap the knowledge and experience of others to improve our setup. I judge the price by its sound not brand. There is a huge following in US that the audio manufacturers sell direct and cut the middleman, pass on the savings to consumers. Visit www.audiocircle.com.
Nearfield listening reduce/delay the effect of sound reflected from the walls due to the distance. Hence, yield a cleaner sound. There is a golden triange formation, speakers and listening position pointing to the centrepoint, same length, work best in a less ideal room.
Placing the tweeter below ear level results a lower soundstage height. Ever experience that soundstage never above the height of the speaker? The singer is like squatting. I love soundstage with theatre height and width.
What is couch height, dingmr? Often we use speaker stand height and neglect couch height. Both are co-related. When sitting on the couch, will your body be slightly tilt (body ergonomic of modern seating)? or up right? If the seat is tilt and tweeter is above the ear level, you can imagine what will happen.
What interconnect and cable do you guys use?
