If I had to spend $250, should I get Bose or Polk?

I already have a Kenwood VR-605 receiver (old but capable of 5.1) and 2 Polk bookshelf speakers (also old) which are pretty good. The Polks have full and wholesome mids, but not impressive highs).
With that said, for $250, I can get either a Polk subwoofer, OR I can get the Bose Companion 3 Series II system which is a 2.1 system also.
So really, with what I have, I can have either a Polk 2.1 system or a Bose 2.1system. (I really have my heart set on the Bose Companion 5 but that's $399).
What you think? Do you think a Polk center channel will help compensate for the sub-par highs from the Polk bookshelves?
Actually I also saw an open-box discount at Circuit City for an Onkyo ONK HTS 5100 7.1 system for $389. How good is that? I couldn't listen to it because the display wasn't hooked up.
What should I do? I know many here on AVS don't like Bose, but I do for many reasons, so please put yourself in the shoes of a person who thinks Bose is awesome! =)

With the reputation Bose has on this forum, I don't think you'll find many here willing to do this. Pretty much everyone is going to tell you to avoid Bose like the plague, because, to be blunt, Bose is not awesome. Here's a good write-up explaining why.
What model are the Polks you already have?
