It is not absolutely necessary to burn in headphones. Whether or not a sound difference can be heard by warming up headphones depends on the headphones and on the individual’s sense of hearing.
Even without a burning in phase, it is absolutely normal for minimal changes in the sound from the headphones to be noticeable after a certain usage period. For example, the headphones might sound a bit softer in the highs.
Improvements in sound, where there actually aren’t any measurable changes, are also often perceived after a certain time. This is also known as the habituation effect. The human auditory system gets used to the sound from the headphones. Sound characteristics which initially may have been found to be annoying become less intensive over time or are even no longer noticed.
It is therefore highly advisable not to rely on the first (sound) impression and to form a judgement too quickly but instead to listen to the headphones over a longer period of time.
At Sennheiser we do not have an official stance regarding the theory that headphones need a "burn in" period. Sennheiser headphones are designed to sound great from the first moment they are plugged in.
Some argue that over period of time a user will become more accustomed to the particular headphones. With this, they will start to notice more of the frequency response range and nuances that the headphones are capable of producing. This argument suggests that over time a user will develop a greater appreciation of the headphones and what they are capable of.
For additional information regarding the theory of "burn in" there is plenty of discussion at Head-Fi.org (http://www.head-fi.org).
Shure earphones do not require a break-in period. Some headphone websites recommend "burning in" or "breaking in" new headphones with an audio signal for some length of time before use. There is some truth behind the idea of a break-in period for loudspeakers and even full-size headphones. The part of the loudspeaker being "broken in" is called the surround, which is the part that flexes when the speaker diaphragm moves in and out. In the case of the tiny drivers used in earphones, the diaphragm only moves about 1/1,000th of an inch in either direction when exposed to normal signals. It is doubtful that a break-in period would significantly alter the compliance of the driver. Shure has not measured any difference in performance between earphones that are brand new and earphones that have been used extensively. Because hearing is subjective, however, different users may hear different things when comparing new and used earphones. |
