DTS

Definition: DTS is a 5.1 channel encoding and decoding system similar to Dolby Digital 5.1, but DTS uses less compression in the encoding process. As a result, many feel that DTS has a better result on the listening end. In addition, while Dolby Digital is mainly intended for the Movie Soundtrack experience, DTS is also being used in the mixing and reproduction of Musical performances. To access DTS encoded information on CDs and DVDs, you must have an AV receiver or preamplifier with a built-in DTS decoder, as well as a CD and/or DVD player with DTS-pass through. For additional information on DTS, go to the DTS Consumer Page.

10 Essential Elements of a Home Theater SystemGetting Started: The Room, The Video Display Device, Audio ReproductionA home theater system is an exciting entertainment option that provides the consumer with an immersive viewing and listening experience. Your home theater system can be something as simple as a 27-inch TV and a home theater-in-a-box system, or a sophisticated custom-built system with video projector and in-wall speakers. However, there is a lot to consider in-between.
Here are the items you need for a well-balanced Home Theater: 1. The Room: The first place to start is the room you intend to place your home theater system in. The size of the room will determine the size and type of video display device (TV or projector) that would be best to use. However, whether your room is large or small, additional questions to consider include: How much ambient light is present? Is the room carpeted or not carpeted? What type of wall construction do you have? Will you be placing your home theater system components in free space, or will you be housing your components in a cabinet or closet and installing your speakers in the wall or ceiling? Where will you be sitting in relation to the screen image? Before embarking on buying your actual home theater system components, especially for a medium-to-high end system, it might be a good idea to consult with a home theater installer to come onsite and assess your room and address the above questions. The installer can make useful suggestions on components or installation concepts that will work best in your room environment, keeping in mind your own specific home theater system budgetary considerations. 2. The Video Display Device: This is the first actual component to consider for your home theater system. After all, the idea of home theater is to bring the movie theater experience home. The most important element of this experience is the visual experience of viewing a large image on a screen. This is where you have a choice of: A large screen (35 or 36-inch) traditional CRT-based television (New units are no longer available as CRT televisions have been phased out - but you may be able to find a used one). A Rear-projection Television A Flat Panel LCD or Plasma Television. A Video Projector/Screen Combination. The actual size of the room will help determine the size of screen that can be accommodated. From there, you need to decide what type of video display device would be most appropriate. In addition, at this point in time, with the increase in the amount of available HDTV programming sources, as well as HD source components, consider a fully-integrated HDTV (ATSC tuner built-in), HD-compatible Television (requires an external ATSC tuner), or a Video projector, instead of a traditional analog television. HDTVs, HD-compatible Televisions, and video projectors will deliver the most from new HD sources, but will also work with your older analog components, such as a VCR. 3. Audio Reproduction - Home Theater Receiver or Preamp/Amp Combination: The next essential element of the movie theater experience is sound. The way this is implemented in a home theater system is with either an AV receiver or Preamplifier/Amplifier combination. An AV Receiver usually combines the functions of three components: A. A radio tuner for AM/FM and, in some cases, HD (High Definition Radio), Internet Radio, or XM and/or Sirius Satellite Radio. B. A Preamplifier that switches and controls which audio and video source is selected (such as a DVD player, VCR, CD player, etc...) and processes the incoming stereo or surround sound signals and distributes them to the correct amplifier channels and the subwoofer output. The preamp in an AV receiver can also route video signals coming from source components (such as a DVD player) and direct the video signal to the television. C. A built-in Multi-channel amplifier (5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 channels) that sends the surround sound signals and power to the speaker system. A Home Theater, AV, Surround Sound Receiver or Separate Preamp and Amplifier The Home Theater, AV, Surround Sound receiver is the heart of a home theater system and provides most, if not all, the inputs and outputs that you connect everything, including your television, into. A Receiver provides an easy and cost-effective way of centralizing your your home theater system. However, in many higher-end home theater system installations, the functions of a Receiver are often provided by separate components: Preamp/Processor, Tuner, and either a single multi-channel amplifier or even separate amplifiers for each channel. Such a setup provides more flexibility in switching out and/or upgrading the separate aspects of the home theater system as well as isolating any interference that is caused by having all these functions combined in a signal chassis and sharing the same power supply. For the average consumer, however, a good Receiver will function just fine.
4. Loudspeakers:
The next components to consider for your home theater system are the loudspeakers. Just as the size and type of room dictates the type of video display device you need, the same factors also affect the speakers you need for your home theater. Two key points to remember: A. Before you buy - listen to several types of speaker setups. B. Consider buying the same brand and related model speakers for your home theater. This will insure that you will have a better acoustical match between both the speakers and the room. Check out more on Loudspeakers: Loudspeaker Basics and Products. 5. A Subwoofer: The advent of home theater has introduced the Subwoofer to many consumers. A subwoofer is a specialized speaker that only reproduces the extreme low frequencies present in movies or music. There are several types of subwoofers you can use in a home theater system, and, once again, the size and type of room, and issues such as whether the room is carpeted or not will help you determine which subwoofer is right for you. Once again, you need to perform listening tests. 6. Source Components: At a minimum, you need some type of DVD player for your home theater system. Two things to consider in a DVD player: Progressive Scan and Upscaling capability. This will insure you get the best possible image from your DVDs, especially if you are viewing them on an HDTV. Since all DVD players can play CDs, you many not need a CD player. However, having a separate CD-only player in a home theater system is quite common, especially if it is a high-end unit providing better CD audio performance. Also, if you decide to get a Blu-ray Disc player to access true high definition source content, instead, or in addition to, a DVD player, you can also use it to play standard DVDs and, in most cases, audio CDs as well. For more on the Blu-ray Disc player option, check out my articles Before You Buy a Blu-ray Disc Player, and Blu-ray Disc and Blu-ray Disc Player FAQs. In addition, you may also want to include a DVD recorder or DVD recorder/VCR combination in lieu of your old VCR. However, you can still use your old VCR (especially if it is a HiFi Stereo unit) with your home theater system. Also, you need to decide how you will receive your primary television programming: Antenna, Cable, or Satellite. 7. Surge Protector: Surge protectors are the unsung heroes of a home theater system. Although they are not foolproof, providing your system with some sort of surge protection is a good idea. You never know when you might have a sudden power outage, or even a brown out that may affect your system. 8. Connection Cables and Speaker Wire: You can't have a home theater system unless everything is connected; whether you buy basic connection cables and speaker wire or the really high-end stuff. The main things to consider is to use the right type, right length, and to connect everything correctly. Some connections are color coded - make sure the colors on the cable ends match the connections on your components - this makes life a lot easier. In terms of speaker cable, the gauge of the cable can be a factor, depending on the distance the speakers are from the amplifier or AV receiver. I use 16 or 14 gauge speaker wire myself. 18 gauge is very thin and should not be used for longer distances. 9. Universal Remote Control: One of the most confusing parts of a home theater system is not all components and the connections, but actually managing an controlling it. Each component in a home theater system comes with its own remote, leading to a collection that can number half-a-dozen or more. One solution is to opt for a sophisticated, but easy to use, universal remote that can control most of the functions of each of your components. After the initial hurdle of programming the remote for your system, such a device will enable everyone in the family to use the home theater system without frustration. 10. Furniture: You have a fancy home theater system, now you need some comfortable furniture that will make you want to spend your time with your home theater. Your furniture can be of the traditional sofa and chair variety, or you can opt for specialized home theater furniture that include features such as built-in cup holders and extra-overstuffed padding. Final Take There you have it, the basic elements of a well-balanced home theater system. There is no home theater system that is exactly like another, everyone has different rooms, budgets, brand preferences, and decorative tastes when it comes to home theater. The key thing is to keep the basic elements of a well-balanced home theater in mind, while assembling it according to your own needs and tastes.

Exclusive preview: Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver is worthy successor to best-selling TX-SR607

As a successor to the best-selling TX-SR607, the Onkyo TX-SR608 has a lot to live up to. Its key feature, the one it has genuinely launched (just) before any other manufacturer, is HDMI v1.4 connectivity.
The HDMI v1.4 specification allows 3D pass-through from a suitable 3D source to a suitable 3D display device, meaning any receiver with v1.4 HDMI connectivity will be able to simply ‘switch’ 3D signals. This feature has also been leveraged to pass-through HDMI audio and video from source to the TV when the receiver is in standby, very handy for late-night viewing. Likewise, the v1.4 spec offers an HDMI Audio Return Channel, meaning this receiver can amplify the sound from your off-air TV viewing without any other hook up.
Natural sounding
This is an all-new seven-channel power amplifier, claiming 160W a-piece by quoting the figures into a 6ohm load with a 1kHz signal with only one channel driven. Onkyo uses an inverted Darlington circuit configuration amplifier, offering very low negative feedback operation (so likely to be more natural sounding) with the disadvantage of a lot of ancillary control circuitry involved to keep the system in check.
The rest of the features form a mid-priced receiver hot-list, including 1080p upscaling from Faroudja, Burr-Brown DACs to buff up the audio and twin parallel sub outputs – which is still 7.1, not 7.2 as Onkyo claims. Okay. there is no networking or USB input capability, but, adding to the DPL IIz channel mix, this receiver also sports Audyssey DSX height and width channel processing.
The SR608’s GUI is slick and intuitive, with super-fast access to any feature. Setup is straight-forward in manual mode, and there's also automated Audyssey 2EQ setup with a supplied mic.
The TX-SR608 is a home cinema amplifier through and through. It is geared up to rock your sofa with high-class HD material and it pooh-poohs low-quality MP3 or compressed video with scarcely concealed disdain. Not surprisingly, the all-action sequences of the mighty Avatar rip into the room with huge scale and immersive effects even in vanilla 5.1 mode. Moreover, unlike some of Onkyo’s earlier budget receivers, the SR608’s balance is not particularly volume dependent. It sounds fast and fruity from gentle listening all the way to ASBO reference level. Dialogue remains lucid and articulate without dominating the sound and the music swells with impressive cinematic scale.
Feature set
Running Heat on DVD, the 1995 SD picture is given a whole new lease of life and crafted in near HD quality. Using a 1080p projector and 120in screen you can still see a lot of softness in the edges and it lacks the depth of a Blu-ray transfer but on a 42in LED Samsung TV it looked sharp and vibrant. Of note there were no synching issues between the different displays and the receiver; no hiccups, no delays or flashing screens before everything shook hands and started talking to each other.
You can’t fault the Onkyo’s feature set, audio aplomb or its video performance for the money (just £450). Add in the v1.4a HDMIs and the option of height or widths channels and you have a solid best buy receiver with its peers trailing in the wake.

JAPAN/KOREA: Mixed results for major consumer electronics companiesYESTERDAY

Less smiles at LG as profits plummet

Most of Japan's big electronic companies turned a profit in the first quarter of the current financial year, turning around past losses and putting black ink back in the ledger, while one of the two major Korean players in consumer electronics, LG, saw its operating profits fall 90% year on year.

Although Sony reports that a major factor in its success has been growing sales of its LCD TVs, poor performance in the television sector is cited by LG as one of the reasons for its falling profits.

And while LG has just announced it's to spend a trillion won (around £540m) expanding one of its major LCD production facilities, increasing the staff by almost 30%, in Japan Sharp's executive vice president Toshishige Hamano has sounded a note of caution.

He said the company is considering slowing down production at its new LCD plant in Sakai, which came onstream in October last year, citing growing stockpiles of LCD panels created by slowing TV sales in the USA and China.

Of the top six Japanese consumer electronics companies, only NEC reported a net loss for the first quarter of the financial year. Sony's TV business was up 60% year on year by volume, selling 5.1m sets and putting the division Y3bn (£21m) in the black. Last year it lost Y8bn (almost £60m) in the same period.

Sony's overall net income was Y25.7bn (£187m), against Y37.1bn (£270m) of loss this time last year.

And despite that caution about US and Chinese sales, Sharp increased TV sales by 34% to 2.69m units, helping the company to a group net profit of Y10.6bn (£77m). Last year it lost Y25.2bn (£184m) in the first quarter.

Toshiba
, which lost Y57.8bn (£421m) in this period last year, reported a profit of Y400m (£2.9m) this time round, Fujitsu was up to Y1.6bn (£11.6m) of profit, having lost Y29.1bn (£212m) last year, and Panasonic turned a Y52.9bn (£385m) group net loss to Y43.6bn (£318m) of profit, on sales up 35% to Y2.16tn (£15.7bn).

However, Japanese business leaders are still warning that exchange rates still threaten future profitability: the yen remains strong against both the US dollar and the euro.

That, and the falling price of TVs, was a major contributing factor to LG's poor profitability, despite the fact its TV division saw sales up 47% year on year.
But the 126.2bn won (£68m) operating profit LG as a whole reported for April-June is put into context by the results announced by Samsung Electronics – it showed a net profit of 4.28tn won (£2.3bn), up 83% year on year, on sales of 37.98tn won (£20.4bn).

More good news from Samsung comes from the USA, where the company has dominant market shares in most sectors of the TV market, and expects to enjoy its fifth year as the biggest-selling TV brand.

Samsung has a 46% US market share in 40in+ LCD TVs, 43% in Full HD sets, just short of half the 120Hz/240Hz LCD market, and 43% of the 50in+ plasma market.

KEF KHT5005.2 £ 1300 3 * * *

We thought we’d like the style, and we do – it’s the sound that leaves us a bit coldWrite your own review

  • ForTall, slimline design is stylish and flexible; decent integration; always-cohesive surround sound
  • AgainstLacks excitement, punch and power; flabby bass

KEF has had plenty to crow about in the past few years, almost always presenting its packages with more than a dollop of style.

We’ll point out now that this system, from the KHT – KEF Home Theatre – range, is due to be phased out in the summer, so you might have to be on your toes to get your hands on one (if that doesn’t sound too uncomfortable).

This set was reduced to £1300 at the end of last year, so is now very affordable. You wouldn’t guess that out of the box; the HTS5001.2 satellites and the HTC5001.2 centre have an eye-catching aluminium column design available in matt silver or gloss black.

There are three drivers in each, including a 3in Uni-Q array driver. The HTB2SE subwoofer looks like a PV1 with a sawn-off top, standing on its own small stand, as the satellites do, and boasting a 10in driver.

One thing to point out: we couldn’t manoeuvre our terminated speaker cables in to the connections, so you’ll probably need bare-wire speaker cable.

A lacklustre sound
Once up and running, our main gripe is a lack of excitement. The Lord of the Rings Blu-ray boxset has myriad chances for your system to let fly, but this KEF doesn’t take the opportunity.

Sound effects that should have punch and power sound lacklustre, struggling to draw us in to the action, with even the most explosive episodes sounding relatively subdued.

Despite this, the KEF system doesn’t boast the smoothest of tonal characters, certain frequencies hardening up at loud volume.

The subwoofer is a little loose around the edges, bass notes lacking precision and giving the rest of the system a less-than-solid base on which to build.

Yes, it’s cohesive, integrates well enough and there’s decent detail on show, but compared with the competition out there, the KHT5005.2 isn’t quite at the races.

KEF KHT2005.3 £ 800 5 * * * * * Another KEF-system that sounds as good as it looks - which makes it rather special Write your own review Review Your Opinion Tech Specs For Stylish, eye-catching looks; fine build and finish; musical, detailed, refined sound; great with movies and music Against Not the last word in all-out excitement We're led to believe that KEF doesn’t like the ‘eggs’ nickname for its style speaker systems, but the label has stuck – fortunately so has the style and high quality of KEF’s subsequent packages. This latest offering bears a few subtle changes from its predecessor. Most obvious is the new subwoofer, the Kube 2, which packs a 25cm driver alongside an opposing 25cm passive radiator, together generating a claimed power output of 200W. Elsewhere, the satellites sport a showy high-gloss finish, and the adjustable satellites are now far more rigid once put in position. Satellites are smooth operators As the picture shows, there’s a dedicated centre channel alongside four identical speakers. Each speaker has a 10cm Uni-Q driver with a 1.9cm tweeter at its centre, all cased within a cast aluminium enclosure. Listening to the ear-bashing (in a good way) DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack of The Incredible Hulk Blu-ray disc, the integration of the satellites is excellent, steering effects seamlessly to create a surround whole that’s cohesive and immersive. Scale is impressive, too, really filling our large testing room with sound. The KEFs are a very much a smooth listen: dialogue is warm but clear, while top-end treble sounds are handled with much control. As for the sub, it integrates well, providing plenty of punch and power. The proof of this system’s aptitude, however, is its ability with music: whether it’s playing Jean-Michel Jarre in surround sound, or belting out Kings of Leon in stereo, it delivers a musical, natural soundstage that majors on both timing and insight. This KEF KHT2005.3 package isn’t the most exciting here, but it is certainly the most accomplished and assured. It’s going to take something very special indeed to knock this system off its perch.

KEF's 2000 series of 5.1-channel home cinema speakers has enjoyed huge success since it was first launched eight years ago, earning awards and admiration from the press and public alike. The KHT2005.3 is the third generation sub/sat system from this acclaimed series, and packs KEF's sophisticated audio technology into a compact set of speakers that won't make unreasonable demands on your space or your wallet.

The system comprises four HTS2001.3 satellites, an HTC2001.3 centre speaker and the new Kube-2 subwoofer (which is also available separately). The satellites are staggeringly good looking and beautifully built, featuring a high gloss black finish (also available in matt silver) and the distinctive egg shape that has become a much loved feature of the 2000 series. Each one is perched on a newly-tweaked multi-directional base that enables it to be positioned anywhere and placed at any angle, making it easy to tailor to your needs. The centre channel boasts the same base and styling but can be horizontally mounted, and all of the sats can be mounted on optional floor stands.

The Kube-2 powered subwoofer is pleasingly compact and styled with a gloss black top panel and three sides covered in black cloth. Inside it boasts a powerful 200W class-D amplifier and a side-firing long-throw bass driver, complimented by a 250mm active bass reflex. Its vital statistics are a frequency range of 35Hz to 150Hz, a maximum output of 112dB and a 23 litre internal volume, all of which points towards some seriously muscular bass performance.

Its rear panel sports a healthy range of knobs and switches to fiddle with, including volume and crossover dials (the latter ranging from 40Hz to 140Hz), a 180 degree phase control switch and an EQ switch that lets you boost the bass response by +6dB or +12dB to account for differing room conditions and tastes. Connections are limited to a pair of phono line inputs.

The satellites are similarly well-specified, fitted with KEF's 100mm UNI-Q driver with a metal dome tweeter and neodymium magnets, which is designed to deliver the type of sound that you'd get from much larger speakers - a task at which KEF has succeeded in the past. It also helps to disperse the sound over a wider area and envelop the listening position.

The high quality binding posts on the back of each satellite are easy to access, allowing you to connect speaker cables securely and conveniently. Also the moveable bases are smooth and sturdy, and enable you to turn and tilt them without fear of snapping them off. If need be the bases on any of the sats can be attached, removed and reattached for horizontal mounting.

To test their sonic prowess, we hooked the KHT2005.3 up to a Denon AVR-3802 receiver being fed audio signals from an OPPO DV-983H DVD player. They took a while to warm up, but once they did the speakers delivered a superb performance that belies their compact size, making both movies and music sound absolutely entrancing.

The first disc into the tray was Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, which may be a kid's movie but it boasts a number of big action sequences that provide a stern test for any sound system. The frenetic sound effects and jaunty score are reproduced with real bounce and vigour, but the most impressive aspect is the formidable bass output from the Kube-2 as big chunks of ice come crashing to the ground. Overall, the sound is crisp, fluid and most importantly powerful, and if you were blindfolded you'd swear blind it was coming from much bigger speakers.

Another key factor in this stellar performance is the way the sats, sub and centre blend into each other coherently thanks to an identical tonal match that makes for a pleasingly homogenous, unified sound. The crystal clear highs provide a very detailed sound, and they're backed up by smooth mids and bass reproduction that's deep enough to ensure a smooth and seamless handover to the sub. What's more, whichever sat you pick as the centre does an excellent job, offering realistically reproduced voices.

Switching over to Terminator 2: Judgment Day's sensational DTS soundtrack, the KEFs turn in yet more top-notch sound quality. Their handling of the opening battle between the humans and the machines is dazzling, sounding smooth and controlled but with enough kick to get the pulse racing. Our love affair with this killer system is cemented by the breathless chase through the canal, particularly when the T1000's truck cab makes its famous crash-dive off the edge - the depth and solidity of the crunch as it hits the ground is worth £700 alone.

And music playback gives us no cause for complaint either. The Stevie Wonder-like stylings of Frank McComb Live In Atlanta on CD allows the KHT2005.3 to show off its formidable frequency range as well as injecting a great deal of warmth and openness into the proceedings, while DVD-Audio and SACD material is handled with wonderful attention to detail.

Verdict

The KHT2005.3's performance is among the best we've heard from a sub/sat system at this price, delivering the kind of confident and sophisticated sound quality that many people wouldn't expect from such compact satellites. The sub does a great job too, offering deep bass that works in perfect harmony with the other channels, and KEF yet again displays its knack for eye-catching design with a glorious egg shaped design and sumptuous finish. So if you want an approachable and affordable speaker package but don't want to compromise on performance, then the KHT2005.3 is an ideal choice.
