Houston 91, Boston 73
McGrady Scores 35 to Down Celtics

Tracy McGrady shot 14-for-20 from the floor Tuesday.

In desperate need of a win Tuesday before heading out on a six-game road trip, the Houston Rockets responded with a 91-73 win over the Boston Celtics at Toyota Center. Tracy McGrady led the way for Houston with 35 points, 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter. The Rockets raised their record to 5-12, while Boston fell to 7-10 on the season. Paul Pierce scored 20 points for the Celtics, 13 via a perfect night from the charity stripe.
“Our effort was good,” Houston head coach Jeff Van Gundy said. “Pierce getting in foul trouble helped. I thought our guys competed well, even when we were a little out of whack on offense.”
The effort Tuesday was in stark contrast from Saturday when Houston lost to the Memphis Grizzlies 90-75 in a game, which was viewed by some, as lacking effort. That was not the case Tuesday. While McGrady dominated all night, it was an unlikely start for Ryan Bowen that may have launched the Rockets to the win.
Bowen was everywhere on the floor during his 30 minutes of action as he got the nod over recent starter Luther Head. He recorded eight rebounds, three of those offensive, and kept countless loose balls alive on both ends of the floor. The effort did not go unnoticed by Van Gundy, or anybody on the Houston bench.
“You would have to be comatose not to be inspired by Ryan Bowen’s play,” Van Gundy said. “It is all out effort, all the time. When you pay a guy money, that’s what you expect.”
Van Gundy added that there is not a better effort player in the NBA than Bowen, who harassed Boston’s Ricky Davis all night long. Davis entered Tuesday scoring almost 22 points a game. Tuesday, he managed just 10 points on 5-12 shooting.
Oddly enough, it was Bowen who took the night’s first shot. He missed and Boston was on the scoreboard first when Kendrick Perkins scored inside for the Celtics. Houston leaned heavily on Yao Ming and Juwan Howard in the first quarter, each scoring six points in the period and combining for 12 of the Rockets’ 18 points in the first quarter. The Celtics, getting seven points from second-year man Delonte West, evened the score at 18 in the first when Al Jefferson hit a seven-foot jump shot. Jefferson probably had the best all-around game for the visitors as he scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting, while ripping down 10 rebounds to lead both teams.
Jon Barry returned to action in the first quarter Tuesday but quickly left the game after two minutes of action after sustaining a right calf strain. Barry had been out of the lineup with a left foot injury. He will not be traveling with the team on the upcoming road trip.
Houston took command of the game in the second quarter shooting 63 percent (10-16) from the field and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line. Luther Head, who came off the bench to score 11 points, went 2-2 from three-point range in the second quarter. Head was 3-5 from behind the arc on the night. McGrady had 16 points by halftime, but had to leave at the 2:03 mark in the second quarter with three fouls. It didn’t matter. Houston took a 48-38 lead into the locker room fueled by an aggressive McGrady, who scored 11 in the second quarter on lob passes, three-point shots, and two trips to the free throw line.
“You would have to be comatose not to be inspired by Ryan Bowen’s play,” Van Gundy said.
Houston opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run to widen their margin to 59-42. Boston responded with a 12-2 run of their own to get within seven points at 61-54. The Celtics would not threaten again as Houston closed the third with four straight points to give them a 65-54 advantage after one.
McGrady started scoring in the fourth with two straight baskets before Boston netted five straight points to make the score 72-61. Yao Ming, who scored 12 points and hauled in nine rebounds, left the game in the fourth quarter after taking a Brian Scalabrine elbow above his right eye. Bleeding profusely, Yao did not return to action until nearly five minutes later. Fortunately for the Rockets, the loss of their big man came at the most opportune time as each time Boston would threaten to make a run, McGrady would respond with a dagger from deep or a drive in the lane. Houston cruised to the win as McGrady went 6-7 from the field in the fourth and 14-20 overall. He also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists, blocked two shots, and collected two steals in what might have been his best effort of the season to date.
The Rockets return to action Thursday in Sacramento against the Kings. Tip-off is 9:30 p.m. and can be seen on TNT.
