Settings
Sharp: Noise Reduction:Low, Sharpness:0, Backlight:-7
Philips: DNR:Max, Sharpness:3, Brightness:30
*note: i turned down backlight and brightness to settings i would normally watch at and not at the lowest settings to prove a point*
Observations
PQ is pretty good for an LCD, Equal to my old Sony 27" or better. I think a lot ppl haven't used the settings to really enhance the picture. HD picture and SD picture require different settings because they are different settings coming through.
One thing is for sure, without any kind of Digital Noise Reduction on either TV the SD picture looks like crap. This is b/c (i assume) they are displaying a poor signal and magnifying the defects.
With everything calibrated, I chose several channels or at least the channels that i thought were better quality programs (sports, c-span, cops, tbs). Both pictures look good.
Sharpness: Philips is sharper in SD, Sharp has a "softer" image, blended together so you may or may not like that... however, it's odd that some images display sharpness in certain areas of the picture and softness on the edges.
Color: Philips looks good, I still haven't adjusted the sharp since there are a total of 18 RGB settings that I can choose. Out of the box though, I would say they both push certain colors.
Overall, both look pretty good for SD. I'm not sure why they would be horrible unless it's not calibrated.
Black Comparison
The blacks on the Sharp has controls for backlight AND brightness
The Philips only has brightness and does not affect the backlight (very minimally)
Observations
There is a clear winner here as you will see from the pictures. Sharp wins by a landslide. Properly calibrated, the sharp really blows the Philips away. I hope no one judges these TVs in store since everyone should know that the settings are on vivid or set improperly.
I hope my pictures show the difference but basically, the philips is a lot whiter compared to the sharp. No details are lost in the picture in dark modes. The philip blends the black but it seems that the details are lost. |
