Verdict
So here we are again. For the third TV review in a row I find myself faced with a 2016 HDR-capable TV that’s capable of delivering at times mind-bogglingly brilliant picture quality but which struggles to manage HDR’s extra light demands during dark scenes.
The net result of this is a picture performance with HDR 4K content that’s comfortably superior to anything Sony has delivered from a TV before for 90% of the time, but which is also more likely to leave you feeling distracted by backlight issues for the other 10% of the time. So in deciding whether the 65X930D is for you you’ll need to bear this equation in mind – perhaps reducing the distraction percentage if you seldom if ever watch TV in a darkened room.
Also worth bearing in mind are the 65X930D’s slightly disappointing gaming and audio performances, the need to take more brightness out of standard dynamic range images than you may feel comfortable with (and than you had to with previous high-end Sony TVs) and the fact that while improved from 2015, the Android TV interface still feels cumbersome and unfocused versus some of the smart TV competition.
In short, while the 65X930D clearly advances TV picture quality in some emphatic ways and can deliver 4K HDR images that often take your breath away, not every step it takes is in the right direction.
