LV1/V2 gain stage - these need to be gain matched and must be low noise
LV2/V1 - not in signal path, regulators, can influence gain
the rest - cathode followers, no gain so no matching necessary
LV1/LV2 and V1/V2 interact with each other. In preamps matching is gain
matching, and is easily done with many tubes on hand. If not, gain matching
can be done through the use of the balance control on the front
panel/remote. There's really nothing wrong with this, but people don't seem
to like the idea of the tubes themselves not being gain matched. The net
result is the same.
Phase balance is a different story, and is important when using balanced
connection (does not affect SE). Since it is very hard to find two tubes
with four identical sections in them, we've incorporated a balance control
for the two halves within each tube - it's the trimpot in each channel that
can be seen with the cover off. Disconnect outputs, feed a 1 kHz sine wave
through a generator or test CD, set volume to 78 or thereabouts, measure AC
voltage across XLR output pins 1-2 and compare with voltage across pins 1-3.
Rotate trimpot until they're both equal. (A THD analyzer is the real way,
but I'm assuming it's not accessible.)

Its input stage is a differential amplifier consisting of one 6922 twin triode per channel, with an AC balance control between its cathodes. This control's wiper is connected to the plate of a 6GH8 pentode/triode tube's pentode section (more about its triode section later). This pentode functions as a constant - current source for the input differential pair and is connected to a regulated -125-volt supply. The plate outputs of the differential pair are connected through 12-kilohm plate-load resistors to a regulated 176-volt supply; each input triode conducts about 4.7 milliamperes.

From the input stage's plates, signals are capacitor-coupled to the output stage, which is configured as a cathode follower with a constant-current source. In this case, the cathode follower consists of paralleled halves of two 6922 dual-triode tubes while the constant current source uses the other halves of these tubes, also in parallel. Each channel therefore uses four 6922 dual-triode tubes, two per signal phase. This stage receives power at +125 and -125 volts from dedicated voltage regulators. The signal is directly coupled from the cathodes of these 6922s to the output. 』

The cathode-follower output stage consists of two dual triodes per signal phase per channel for a total of eight 6922s! One triode half of each 6922 is paralleled with that of another 6922 for low output impedance while the second half of both serves as a paralleled constant current source. In addition, a pair of 6U8As regulates AC bias of the input stage and serves as an error amp to sense and correct phase balance in the output stage. DC servos are used around the output stage and no output coupling capacitor is used. This results in a very low output impedance, especially for a tube preamp: 45 ohms single-ended, 90 ohms balanced.

这是一个网友的问题 大家瞧一下
I feel they are better than Sovek 6922 in some ways: warm midrange, 不刺耳，relaxed, detailed bass... but lacks of trebles---dumb! I want to try other tubes, but SF line 1 needs 6 tubes together!! So it will be always too expensive for me to try better tubes like Mullard or TFK... Why Sonic Frontiers design preamp like this?? Bad idea for users! Can you tell me what benefits it will have to use six tubes in tube preamp like SF's? Generally what's the difference between a tube pre amp w/ less tubes and a tube pre amp w/ more tubes? Have a nice weekend!

There is nothing wrong with SF design, it is just the taste of Chris Johnson make SF amps sound like that.
By the way, I think put all the good parts into an amp can not make the amp sound good. Tuning is also important .

They are marvelous for tubes, a wide soundstage, great bass and heavenly .... Easily driven with Sonic Frontiers SF80. Work well in average sized living room (14x20). .... thought of making them, to fine tuning and adjusting design details. ...

helped me finding also a reasonable preamplifier by tuning a SFL-2 Sonic Frontiers.

刚入手SF Line 1搭ARC后级，机器很新原机配管。前家跟机管一直没用，也很新。原试听几天，感觉动态不错，较细腻。增益明显比ARC小，请教兄弟们说说换什么牌子管较合拍而保持原机风格？
