Introduction toalbum: Later this year, the ChinaPhilharmonic Orchestra (CPO), in cooperation with DR Classics and under thedirection of China Philharmonic Artistic Director Long Yu, will release China'sfirst commercial series of 100 orchestra performance albums, as well as 10vinyl LPs. Not only is this a milestone in the history of Chinese philharmonicmusic, it is also a daring experiment on behalf of the Chinese classical musicand recording industries. Taking a broadperspective of today's classical music market, the Back to Live series,which has renewed audiences' interest in recordings of live concerts, has begunan unexpected trend. Since the London Symphony Orchestra's LSO Live,followed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's CSO Live and the AmsterdamRoyal Concert Hall Orchestra's RCO Live, the world's most outstandingorchestras have successfully created an era of commercially-released liveconcert albums. In China, along with this release of the CPO and DR Classics CPOLive series, will establish the place of Chinese symphonic music and theChinese record industry in this new wave of international musical excellence. The vastmajority of the works included on the CPO Live series of records arefrom performances by the CPO from concerts held after 2008, which is consideredto be when the CPO reached its full artistic maturity. This series consists ofa selection of concerts, which collectively act as testimony to the monumentalprogress made by Chinese symphonic music since the turn of the century, andwhich have now become milestones. From the large-scale symphonies of Mahler andBruckner, to grand performances such as Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde, thiscompilation includes the exceptional demonstrations which have contributed tothe evolution of the symphonic music of China. The series of 100 CDs and 10 LPs includes 105 concerts by the CPO,and 213 classic works of eastern and western music. Not only does the CPO showyou their highest level of skill at performing works by great westerncomposers, such as those of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahlerand Wagner, but they also offer you their renditions of works by Chinesecomposers such as Tan Dun, Chen Qigang, Ye Xiaogang, Guo Wenjing, and ZhouLong. Alsocontributing to the series are international artists including Renée Fleming,Vadim Repin, Barbara Bonney, Sumi Jo, Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit,Daniel Harding and Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Okko Kamu, Jacek Kaspszyk, who teamup with outstanding Chinese artists such as Lang Lang, Wang Yujia, Chen Sa andWang Jian, creating an ensemble which indeed will be difficult for musicaficionados to resist. Behind everyalbum is a concert well worth revisiting, and CPO Live serves as thefirst opportunity for symphonic music fans in China to return to the samemoment of concerts they've attended personally, and at the same time is achance for those new to the scene to experience the wonder that the ChinaPhilharmonic Orchestra has to offer.
