Samsung (KN55ES9600) and LG-Display (lg-55em9600) introduced their 55 inch OLED-Tv panels at CES-2012. Both companies want to introduce that panels in 2012. Samsung thinks that the market share of OLED-Tv can be 0.2 percent or 500.000 units in 2012.
Technical differents Samsung and LG-DisplayThe size is the same but the technology is not the same. Samsung and LG uses different panel development methods. SMD and LG divide their 8G mother glasses into six and two partitions respectively for evaporation, they should have the same cutting efficiency in manufacturing 32 inch and 55 inch panels as those based on a single mother glass. But the companies do not want to produce a 32 inch because they want to focues the premium market. LG want to introduce their 55 inch OLED-panel before the London Olympic Games. And we know from Samsung Austria that the company want to launch before LG…. and will be cheaper than 8.000.- dollars.
The key issue for AMOLED Tv panels is whether the TFT backplane will shift away from LTPS type to oxide type. Compared to oxide TFT, the LTPS type is superior in electron mobility, but since TV panel production lines are currently based on a-Si, more investment will be needed for the construction of new LTPS based large sized panels. It costs much less to convert a a-Si fab to an oxide TFT fab. Moves are being cosidered to switch backplane to oxide TFT, which is more than 40 times superior to the a-Si type, but inferior to the LTPS Type. LG-Display is testing an oxide backplane in an 8G pilot line, but Samsung Mobile Display still doubts the reliability of oxide TFT backplanes for larger panels.
