FHP Develops World's First 42inch FULL Spec High Definition PDP - Full Spec HD ALIS Technology Realizes World's Finest Cell -
December 7, 2005 — Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited (FHP, President : Yoshiyuki Imoto) today announced the development of world's first 42-inch size full spec HD (High Definition) plasma display panel (PDP) module with pixel number of horizontal 1920 x vertical 1080. This product realizes high brightness, high contrast as well as high density cell structure with improved features of ALIS technology that can realize high resolution in spite of smaller screen size. It reproduces high-definition images finely detailed and beautifully with 2.07 mega-pixels which is approx. 2.6 times more than other makers' 42-inch XGA type.
In general, fine cell pitch panel has some difficulties to realize the expected display performance of brightness and contrast ratio. FHP achieves high brightness (1000cd/m2) and high contrast (3000:1) suitable for full spec HD display by newly developed Slim-Rib structure and high speed drive technology. Thickness of rib becomes 2/3 as compared to the conventional model and it realizes higher aperture ratio even with high density cells. FHP started mass production of world's first 42-inch high-definition PDP with our own ALIS technology and has led the growing market of high-definition PDP. The development of 42-inch full spec HD PDP is expected to expand PDP market toward further high resolution and high picture quality. This product will be launched in spring 2007. Ubiquitous Platform Group of Hitachi, Ltd. plans to release the TV set using this PDP module.
Unlike LCDs which use backlight, PDPs are self-emissive devices that can beautifully reproduce the subtle shadows of such as climbing clouds and white cotton by suppressing the brightness of large-area white portions for more visual appeal (Dynamic Brightness Control). Also PDPs have superior ability for expression of motion picture. Faces of quickly moving athletes at sports programs can be reproduced in fine detail without blur. Development of full HD model in 42-inch size makes it possible for people to enjoy the vivid images of digital high-definition broadcasts with various screen sizes.
Self-emissive devices which can display the fine and texture-filled images bring the displays up to the new stage.

Based on this technology world's finest cell (each cell area: 0.16 x 0.48mm2) is realized which enables to develop world's first full spec HD PDP for 42-inch screen size. ALIS technology employs single scan method, while it can secure the long enough sustain timing to drive 42-inch full spec HD pixels. Arrangement of address driver is made to secure the wider pitch of electrode terminals. Those approaches realize the high picture quality as well as high productivity.
2. High brightness 1000cd/m2, Dark-room contrast 3000:1
Thickness of rib which partitions each cell becomes only 2/3 of conventional model. The Slim-Rib realizes wider aperture ratio and secures wider area for phosphor application even with very fine cell. In addition by adopting high speed drive control technology high brightness of 1000cd/m2 peak is realized in spite of high resolution (42-inch full spec HD) and "glitter and sparkle" which require strong impressions can be clearly and beautifully displayed. Furthermore, by optimization of panel drive wave form background brightness is lowered and dark-room contrast reaches to 3000:1, which enables to show the pure black.
3. Enhanced-quality picture control for various images
By further development of effective signal processing both for motion and still picture this PDP enhances the grayscale performance and quality of motion pictures. It obtains high expressiveness of gradation to show a delicate touch for dark scene in movies, as well as excellent image quality for motion picture in sports programs. Moreover, combination of high resolution (2.07M pixels) and high aperture ratio by ALIS technology realizes the fine and soft picture image which is suitable for full spec HD and boundary of pixel is not perceived even viewed from the place close to TV set.
