Sony Launches First 4K Projector – The VPL-VW1000ES

Technophiles across the world are being warned not to become too comfortable with their current HD and Blu-Ray collections. Dissatisfied with the way in which home theatre watchers usually set their limits at 1080p while digital cinema goes as high as 4K, Sony has shrunk down its commercial line of movie projectors to produce the very first home system capable of 4K quality – namely the VPL-VW1000ES.
Sony showcased the new top of the range home projector as the opening of the CEDIA show on Wednesday, bearing the Elite Series branding and offering no less that 4096 by 2160 pixels – which is exactly what is used in the very highest quality cinemas and over four time the resolution of a standard 1080p picture.
Of course, the obvious question to be asked immediately is that of exactly where the 4K content will come from? Sony pictures has a stack or releases shot in the 4K format, but the technology requires to transfer the data to end consumers doesn’t actually exist yet. That being said, Sony reps have stated that they are well and truly on the case, promising a 4K release of the next Spider-Man movie – though have not stated exactly when this is likely to come about.
In the meantime, the 4K upscaler certainly does a good job of taking the standard 1080p content to new levels, so it will not therefore be entirely redundant in the meantime. Sony were also keen to offer the reassurance that the VPL-VW1000ES would be available for less than $30,000…
