CNET.COM:
Plasma panels use an initialization voltage adjusting algorithm to compensate for panel wear over the lifetime of the panel. This allows a panel to display the darkest possible blacks while preventing pixel misfiring. Tuning this algorithm requires extensive long-term testing and tuning. It also requires producing panels that all behave very similarly. Real engineers like the ones at Pioneer devoted lots of time and effort to tuning the algorithm on the R, G, and B channels. If done properly (like Pioneer or Samsung) black levels do not rise, in fact they may even improve with the life of the panel. Panasonic, however, was either lazy or just incompetent. They over-compensated in their voltage program. They drive the panel at a higher voltage than necessary, and the black level increases as the panel ages. The difference begins to occur as soon as 250 hours of use. The black level issue is not normal panel wear, it is not a natural settling of plasma cells. This is an artificial problem directly created by improper programming by Panasonic engineers.
