Our "best products" lists (on the left) take into account design and features, as well as picture quality. However, for people seeking the best picture quality only, the models below will fit the bill. Each TV scored at least an 8 in the Performance subrating, with the exception of the Samsung UND6400 which scored a 7. In the case of a scoring tie, we've ranked them in order of which TV we believe delivers a better overall picture.
As of June 2011, we've removed 2010 TVs from this list. And as usual, the prices below represent just one size in the series; click through to the review to see other sizes.
Panasonic TC-PVT30 series
The successor to our favorite TV of 2010 is also the best performer of 2011. Its black levels are the deepest on this list, and Panasonic says they won't worsen as the panel ages. Every other aspect of its picture is good to excellent, and if money were no object, this would be the TV we'd buy.

Excellent

Samsung PND8000 series
Money is an object to most TV shoppers, however, even those who can afford high-end TVs, and we consider the Samsung UND8000 series a better value than the VT30. Its picture quality is nearly as good (the only other "9" this list) and its design and feature set offer more for less money.
Price: $2,389.00 - $2,699.99 (check prices)

Outstanding

Panasonic TC-PST30 series
The ST30 is the cheapest TV on this list, and therefore the best value we've reviewed in 2011. It edges out the GT30 just barely on the strength of its realistic gamma, but each has its strengths and weaknesses.
Price: $1,175.85 - $1,499.99 (check prices)

Very good

Panasonic TC-PGT30 series
While it outperforms the black levels of Samsung's 2010 plasmas above, the 2011 GT30 series' gamma and other flaws keep it out of the top three.
Price: $1,499.86 - $1,978.00 (check prices)

Samsung UND6400 series
Although it falls short of the plasmas primarily because of worse uniformty and off-angle picture quality, the UNDS6400 deserves credit as the best-performing 2011 LED-based LCD we've tested so far. And yes, it's better than the more expensive UND8000.
Price: $1,296.00 - $1,599.99 (check prices)
* 3.5 stars
Very good
Overall score: 7.9 (3.5 stars)
