For approximately 20 years I am occupied with HighEnd. Over the finished products I came later to the building of loudspeakers and to the Tuning of audio devices. Who is occupied longer times with this hobby and visited a lot of fairs, knows practically all products on the market. Apart from the many beautiful sides there are also negative sides in the Hifi market. The largest problem in this industry - in my eyes - is the fact that it is understood as array of products for the High Society and so the prices are governed. Is there any interesting equipment on the market, at the price of X, beside another one, which is minimum better, has the price for 2X and then you find something on a fair, and you begin to like it, then it costs up to 10X and then the whole thing becomes- artificial priceless. For this reason the number of DIY people is going up , because it is particularly simple to make good equipment somewhat better . The knowledge for this gets everyone, who is interested and is able to use the Internet.
However, borders are set to this thing by the concept of the original device. These are reached by the Tuning or can be increased only for a minimum with a considerable use of material. There are people, for those its enough, others wants more. Therefore many of them look for new manufacturers in the Internet, which can give them that, what they want: Products, which are on a much higher standard than „the usual things“ without artificial prices, but at prices, which are acceptable for both sides.
On this long journey I came to various dealers on Ebay. My experiences with various MHZS players and tube amplifiers were at first very interesting. Here the prices and the achievement seemed to be correct. The devices sounded at first sight properly, but they brought some problems. There the music from a fine tube amplifier which sounds like a concert in the rock cafe with much power but without fine sense; Noise in low passages; other produce a electrostatic loading without grounding according to our standards - and afterwards with attached protective grounding there is a load humm, that cannot be called nor HighEnd, either Hifi. I have tuned them all, but it did not become that what I looked for. After many days sitting on google I found then Audio-gd.com. Watching the pictures have been astonished. Here are very intelligent concepts, very fine current supplies, very good construction units and without this nonsense like sound-worsening protective circuits after the amp stages of a DAC and other Show effects. Who additionally takes a look at the DIY products of Audio-GD notices immediately that in Audio-GD there is somebody, who knows exactly, what he makes there. Thus I ordered first times a DAC3 with 4 pieces of PCM1704UK chips, a clock for the DAC and a clock for my old, but still good Teac VRDS player. After 10 days Audio-GD dispatched the things to me. It ran everything unproblematically; Payment was over Paypal with only few Klicks.
Approx. 2 weeks later the package arrived. After unpacking I was surprised. The DAC is more robust as I believed on the photos, the cabinet is thick, not only at the front - as usual - several millimeters, no, the complete cabinet is very heavy, the ground and the cover, the backside too. The impression is much better in reality than at the photos. It is a top quality of the plugs, power button and not compairable with the other devices, which came otherwise over Ebay.
I was curious about the inner side, because I asked myself, how someone can sell these things for this price. As DIYer I have unscrewed at first the machine, in order to see, what I bought now. Then it became interesting. The cabinet is inside just as high-quality as outside. Same quality are the equipment, the PCBs, the components, too. It is exactly as on the photos.
On the first day it sounded - as expected- not particularly well. But who is occupied with such things, knows, that the equipment is only to power on and to go. The first day is only a function test; a test whether the equipment survived the long transport. Now, it has.
Then it became interesting. Every day there was „a little bit more music“ on the same CD. Already after one week the machine was very, very good. So it was running day after day. After approximately 4 to 5 weeks - 24 hours 7 days - the music was of a „another world “. Compared to everything what I know and that is a lot, it is absolutely phenomenal. In the meantime I have fixed the clock only provisionally. Provisionally, because I stole the voltage somewhere in the CD player, fixed it not well and used chaep cables from the Clock output to the Player PCB. The completition should be later when I have more time. The description of sound is not simple because my English is not the best.
The machine is amazingly neutral and has no own tendencies, with no kind of music. The machine does not exaggerate, neither in the bass, nor in the heights, nor it omits something. it is as neutral without any own sound effects as it is not there. You listen only to the music and dont „notice“ the DAC. It playes very energetic, if it is necessary, but also delicate. It plays very clearly, clean and fine-drawing. The sound location is very exact, the sharpness of the separation of the instruments phänomenal, every instrument has his own place in the listening room. But in my eyes there is something amazing: The combination of color of the instruments, the very correct time and the very accurate dynamics and energy is a completely new experience. (Without the last work) the machine surely exceed already now the level of the new Teac Esoteric X-series, which is well-known. From former times I know that my cheapest cable between clock and PCB must be replaced, and also the Clocks feels not well, if it is screwed simply to the cabinet. Increasable it is futher if the power supplies were outsourced of the machines- Teac for example has in the old VRDS - series bad supplies, which must be completely redesigned - and the clock is to be glued and not screwed on several layers bitumen. But the whole thing is already at the moment amazing.
Using the machines with different fine loudspeakers, with tube amplifiers, with conventional amplifiers and with Class D the sound quality remains on the same high level as with Headphone Tube Amp and HD650.
In all the combinations there were no problems with humming and noise. Also no „clicking“ between the tracks, as it makes for example MHZS, which has relays to cut off if the signal is very low between the tracks.
Only with my DVD player this DAC does not function. This player is adjusted to PCM 41kHZ, but it is not a surprise. It cost 30 euros in a supermarket and stood between refrigerators and vegetables.
I am curious about the new voltage supplies and discrete Amps by Audio-GD and want to play with them when I can take a holiday. This should be the next work. I need still a lot of things for the hobby. But what I dont need any more, is the eternal search for „something different else“. The long journey went at first to HighEnd audio, later to „State of the Art “audio; now to the optimum of sound quality in combination of an acceptable price. Now, my journey has an end after 20 years. It has reached the destination. Thank you!
