CR Model Summary
The Forester has always been a sensible, practical, and affordable vehicle, and the redesigned 2009 model is even better. The base engine is an adequate 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and the turbocharged engine in the XT delivers effortless acceleration. They deliver 20 and 22 mpg overall, respectively. The new Forester has an impressively comfortable ride and it handles well, with responsive, communicative steering. It also has a roomier rear seat, standard curtain air bags and electronic stability control, and improved interior quality. We found the seats in the base model lack good lumbar support. Crash-test results are impressive.
Road Test
The redesigned Forester is our new top-rated small SUV. Its cabin is quiet, with very good fit and finish and a roomy backseat. Safety equipment includes standard curtain air bags and stability control, and crash-test results are excellent. It has the most comfortable ride of any small SUV yet also has agile and secure handling.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Both the base 2.5X and turbo 2.5XT provide an impressive ride, with well-controlled body motions and good road isolation. The ride is comfortable even on rough trails, and the highway ride is smooth. Road noise is notable in both but quieter than in the previous generation. The XT is slightly quieter yet. The Forester is nimble, with nicely weighted steering and good feedback. Thanks to larger wheels and tires, the XT had more grip on the track and posted a higher speed in our avoidance maneuver. Both were predictable and secure. A 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine provides adequate acceleration for the X. Its 224-hp turbocharged version provides effortless acceleration. We got 22 mpg overall on regular fuel with the base engine and 20 mpg with the turbo, which needs premium. Both use four-speed automatics. A slightly notchy five-speed manual is available with the nonturbo and gets 24 mpg. Our braking tests produced very good stopping distances. The headlights shone a very good distance, but the low beams have a distinct cutoff.
INSIDE THE CABIN
The Forester's interior has been improved. Pieces fit together well, with nicely finished edges, but plastics are hard and the headliner looks cheap. The driving position is roomy, with plenty of seat travel and height adjustment to accommodate all sizes. The XT has a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel that lets you fine-tune its position. The tilt-only wheel in the lower models fit most drivers well. There's plenty of head room, even on sunroof-equipped models. Visibility is excellent. Thin pillars and lots of glass all around make the Forester one of the best SUVs to see out of. Front seats are supportive, but the leather seats in the XT Limited provide more support. The leather seats also come with power adjustments for lumbar and cushion tilt; the base model lacks that feature, and some drivers found lumbar support inadequate. The rear seat is a big improvement over the old Forester. It's roomy enough for adults and has a nicely contoured and supportive cushion. All models except the base 2.5X provide a reclining seatback. Cabin access is very easy. Displays and controls are user friendly, with simple climate controls and an easy-to-use, high-mounted radio. But you must change CD tracks with the knob rather than the seek/scan buttons. Temperature modulation was too touchy on the XT Limited, and the fan was noisy in Auto mode. We often used it manually. Cabin storage is moderate. A center console divider is removable to make long open bin. Both versions of the Forester have folding 60/40 rear seatbacks for cargo carrying; access is easy, with a flat floor and large hatch opening.
SAFETY NOTES
Curtain head-protection air bags -- extending to protect the heads of the front- and rear-outboard occupants in side-impact crashes and rollovers -- are standard. Front seatback-mounted side-impact air bags are also standard and supplement the protection provided from the required front air bags and three-point seatbelts in all seats. The front belts have adjustable upper anchors for helping to get a comfortable and safe fit and are equipped with pretensioners and force limiters to reduce belt slack and forces in the event of a crash. An occupant detection system for the front passenger seat senses the passenger weight, belt use, and tension and will automatically disable the front air bag for that seat if it determines that a small child is seated there. There are adjustable and locking head restraints in all seats. Front- and rear-outboard versions are tall enough (even when lowered) to reduce rearward head travel and whiplash and injury for most passengers. The Forester comes with active front restraints which move forward in response to the occupant's pressure on the seatback; this further reduces head travel and whiplash injury. However, even when raised, the rear center seat head restraint is too low to adequately protect taller passengers. Daytime running lights are standard. Driving with kids: Even though the rear center seat is often considered the safest seating position, Subaru recommends against child seat installation in that seat due to the projection of the seat cushion. Some rear-facing infant seat bases may also be subject to tilt when installed using the seatbelts in the outboard rear seats. LATCH installation should provide a secure fit for both front- and rear-facing seats; there are lower-LATCH anchors in the outboard rear seats (the anchors are easy to access in pockets at the rear of the cushion). There are also three top-tether anchors on the ceiling of the cargo area behind the rear seats.
RELIABILITY
We expect reliability to be better than average, according to our latest subscriber survey. Tested model: 2009 2.5XT Limited 4-door SUV AWD, 2.5-liter Four turbo, 4-speed automatic
Major options: None.
This road test applies to the current model year of this vehicle.
