monkeybiz, thanks for sharing with us your first hand accounts of the progress and reform that's been happening in the heart of the middle kingdom! China has always been a culturally conservative, yet ethnically diverse nation, with a propensity for non-intervention and international peace that few other respectable global powers have demonstrated in recorded history.
In recent times of economic development and world recognition, it bemoans the rest of the civilized world that a slumbering dragon has finally begun to wake. However, I should like to point out that the peaceful citizens of China should treat most of the anti-China rhetoric from abroad as simple fud. Ignore it for what it is. That is to say, most of it is coming from honestly misinformed folks. Many westerners have a narrow, is or is not perspective on things. The "you are either with us or you are against us" mentality is how many folks in the west act out themselves. We operate on a digital setting.
Add to the fact that many have never traveled abroad(despite having the economic ability) and do not appreciate cultural diversity and multiplicity, much less co-existence, despite federally mandated attempts to bridge these divides. I live in New Jersey, and my neighbors are the most diverse mix of white, black, Asian, Indian, and other races, and I am proud of that. Most people in America do not. Many have been too indoctrinated in a single modus operandi that to think other wise, critically, logically, or even casually, is sometimes just asking for too much.
I for one am attending the 2008 Olympic Games, and not because it's being hosted by China, a country that has great history and heritage, but because I'm a fan of competitive sports. If it was in Australia, I'd go there to see it too! Of course I'd rather it was during the winter here as I'll get a nice summer vacation in the land of the Oz out of it too!
Peace! |
